Turf Toe Condition

Turf Toe is a traumatic hyperextension of the 1st metatarsophalangeal
joint. This traumatic hyperextension tears the plantar joint capsule. This
injury usually occurs in athletes wearing flexible shoes. It is common in
football, rugby, soccer and baseball when sliding into a base. Turf toe
patients may have decreased range of motion of the great toe joint for
| up to one year following the injury. This type of injury may lead to a
later hallux rigidus. Faulty foot biomechanics may place stress on the
first metatarsal phalangeal joint. A custom molded orthotic to balance
the mechanics and a carbon fiber foot plate to limit joint extension
should speed recovery and make the patient more comfortable.
