Shin splints are a very common injury for people who enjoy running or dancing as a key form of exercise. They are an inflammation of the tibialis anterior muscle; and are often caused by overuse of the leg muscles, tendons or shin bone, perhaps after a long period with little or no such exercise; or an increase in training activities.
If someone suffering from shin splints tries to continue with the activities that have caused the condition, they can find this worsens to a stress fracture of the tibia or shin bone. This then is likely to lead to several weeks of inaction.
