Orthotics is a specific specialty in medicine that focuses on using devices to assist with joint motions and to reduce pain. Orthotics can also refer to some of the specific devices used to achieve pain relief and improved motion. Orthotics can be especially useful for patients with chronic conditions, such as osteoarthritis and arthritis, particularly for knee and foot pain, but orthotics can even improve related arthritic pain in your ankles, hips, and back as well.
Medial Osteoarthritis Treatment
Osteoarthritis is a degenerative condition in which the flexible tissues at the end of various bones start to wear away. This condition does not yet have a cure. Medial osteoarthritis is a form of osteoarthritis found in the knee. Over the years, the use of orthotics has advanced and improved and have been found to be useful in helping with several conditions. Additionally, various studies have determined that the use of foot orthotics for arthritis has been helpful in decreasing the associated pain.
With respect to medial arthritis, there have been several studies that have found that this pain can be greatly reduced with the use of specific orthotics. In one study, the use of a customized five-degree lateral wedge allowed for all the study participants to experience noticeable pain relief. Additionally, over 93% of the participants found that the wedges were comfortable to wear.

Arthritis in Feet and Ankles
There are 33 joints in each of our feet which help the 26 bones in each foot move. Because of all these joints, people with arthritis are particularly prone to pain in their feet. Customized orthotic inserts can significantly diminish the arthritic pain in your feet and ankles by correcting foot alignment and biomechanics.
Part of the pain relief stems from the shock absorbing quality of specific inserts. This cushion provides your body with a measure of relief from the stress that moving can cause on your body. Additionally, this shock absorption helps diminish the amount of wear and tear accumulated by our day-to-day motions while making your movements more comfortable.
